Addictions Counselling

Are you struggling with drinking, substance use or other addictive behaviors?

Are you looking for a compassionate, one-on-one counselling experience?

I am an individual counsellor specializing in trauma and addictions work with older youth and adults. Alongside my MSW I have a Collaborative Specialization in Addiction Studies (CoPAS) from the University of Toronto, and over 12 years of experience working in the field of addictions in various roles.

I work with a variety of clients, with different goals in mind. Whether you have a goal of abstinence, or are looking to have a healthier relationship with alcohol or other substances, my approach is rooted in empathy, evidence-based therapies, and a strong dedication to your overall well-being.

My Approach…

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT):

CBT empowers you to gain insight into the thoughts and emotions underpinning your addictive behaviors. CBT can help us to identify and challenge negative belief systems that may be holding you back in your drive for change, helping to reshape long standing maladaptive patterns.

Another focus will be enabling you to construct more adaptive coping strategies. Bringing in new tools and strategies to cope with cravings and triggers. Pairing mindfulness approaches with CBT, helps to build further awareness of our internal states, and external triggers.

ACT: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy:

ACT is a therapeutic approach that promotes the acceptance of your thoughts and feelings, while simultaneously nurturing a strong commitment to positive behavioral transformation. Our collaborative work can help guide you in identifying your core values and establishing purposeful goals that harmonize your actions with your desired outcomes for change.

EMDR: A Path to Healing and Recovery

One powerful therapeutic technique I utilize in my work with drinking, substance use and other addictive behaviours is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR can be a game-changer, as it addresses the intricate connection between trauma and substance use.

Trauma and Addiction Connection: Trauma, whether big or small, can be a significant factor in the development and maintenance of addictive behaviors. It often serves as an underlying trigger for drinking or substance use. EMDR allows us to explore and reprocess traumatic memories, reducing their emotional impact and diminishing their influence on current behaviours.

EMDR can also be used to directly target and process active cravings and triggers. Making it easier to choose how to respond to them rather than react to them as though on auto-pilot.

My focus:

  • Individualized Care: I offer a highly personalized approach that focuses entirely on your unique needs and goals. Recovery looks different from person to person, and I have a variety of approaches to help support you in your journey towards positive long-lasting change.

  • Trauma-Informed Expertise: My background in trauma-informed care ensures that we can address the underlying issues that be contributing to addictive behaviours with sensitivity and empathy.

  • Safe and Confidential Space: You can speak openly about your challenges and concerns, knowing that our interactions are confidential and judgment-free.

  • Flexible Sessions: I provide both in-person and online counseling sessions to accommodate your schedule and preferences.

Substance use recovery begins with a conversation, and I'm here to listen, support, and empower you on your journey to lasting change. Contact me today, if you would like to book a free 15 minute phone consult to see if my approach might be a good fit for you.
